An African-American Fairytale

Legend has it that the sweet potato is magic, or is it?

Author - Shirley Lipscomb Mitchell has written an original fairytale, “The Legend of the Sweet Potato Pie”.  She says that “Legend has it that if a guy eats sweet potato from the hand of a girl, he’ll fall in love with her, they’ll get married and live happily ever after”.  But what’s a girl to do when her guy doesn’t like sweet potatoes?

This story is about a girl that uses her imagination, creativity and persistence to overcome this challenge. It is about the creation of the first sweet potato pie. The author has been asked often if this is from some footnote in history. She leaves the reader to decide for them self.

The author says that all families have what she calls their “family food stories”. Although this is not a family food story it is derived from a family food story. This is the first of two stories. The next story tells about, “A Girl That Couldn’t Make a Sweet Potato Pie.”

This is the author’s first children’s book. She is retired and lives in Detroit where she enjoys teaching the Hustle and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.
